/ Where DeFi yield comes from
Every sustainable yield in DeFi is payment for a real service or risk. Lending yield is interest paid by borrowers. Liquidity-provision yield is trading fees paid by swappers, minus impermanent loss. Staking yield is protocol issuance paid for securing a network. Restaking yield is additional reward for re-pledging staked assets to secure other services, at the cost of additional slashing exposure. Yield tokenization protocols like Pendle split a yield-bearing asset into principal and yield components, letting you trade or fix future yield. If you can't identify which of these is paying you, the yield is probably an incentive subsidy, not income.
That distinction — real yield versus emissions — is the single most important lens for this category. A protocol paying 40% APY in its own freshly minted governance token is diluting holders to attract liquidity, and that rate collapses the moment emissions taper or the token price falls. Real yield, denominated in blue-chip assets or stablecoins and sourced from actual economic activity, is lower but durable. Read every headline APY as a question: who is paying this, and why?

Yield and risk are inseparable, so compare strategies on a risk-adjusted basis. Stablecoin lending on a blue-chip money market is near the low-risk end. Liquidity provision adds impermanent-loss risk that can erase fee income on volatile pairs. Liquid staking (LSTs) adds smart-contract and depeg risk to base staking yield. Restaking stacks slashing and operator risk on top of that. Yield tokenization and leveraged yield strategies add liquidation and duration risk. Higher up that ladder, the APY rises — but so does the probability and severity of loss.
Beyond strategy type, scrutinize the mechanics: lock-up periods and exit liquidity (can you actually withdraw when you want?), the composition of the yield (how much is real versus emissions), and the dependency stack (an LST restaked into a leveraged loop inherits every risk in the chain). / The risks behind high APYs
The recurring way people lose money in yield farming is mistaking an incentive program for income. Mercenary capital floods a high-emission pool, the rate looks spectacular for a few weeks, then emissions taper, the token price falls, and latecomers are left holding a depreciating reward token while the headline APY collapses. Impermanent loss compounds this on volatile LP positions: you can earn fees and emissions and still end up worse than simply holding the two assets.
Structural risks are just as important. LSTs can depeg from the asset they represent during stress, restaking introduces slashing if an operator misbehaves, and leveraged or looped strategies can be liquidated in a sharp move. Smart-contract risk underlies all of it. The defense is to understand exactly what you're being paid for, prefer real yield over emissions for capital you can't afford to lose, and size speculative high-APY positions as the gambles they are.

It depends entirely on your risk tolerance and what you hold. For durable, lower-risk yield, blue-chip lending and conservative LST strategies are the foundation.
